At the initial visit we will review your medical history and perform a thorough ultrasound examination of your lower legs. We will evaluate the nature of your problem whether it be large bulgy veins or superficial cosmetic veins, and we will provide a comprehensive treatment plan that is unique to you. We will provide an estimate of the cost, and number of treatments expected. The consultation is covered by OHIP.

- Arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment time
- Bring loose shorts or wear a skirt
- Eat breakfast/lunch before your visit
- Avoid lotion on your legs or shaving within 24 hours of appointment
- Bring your OHIP card and list of any medications you take
The treatment involves multiple needle injections in your legs while you are lying down. The fine needle prick is often compared to a mosquito bite. Sometimes the solution stings a bit, but this is temporary. We tape cotton balls over the injection sites which you will leave on for approximately 1 hour. Most of the time, you will also wear compression stockings (20-30mmHg) at home. Expect sessions to last between 15-30 minutes depending on the type of treatment.
- Walking for 15-20 minutes after the treatment is recommended
- You can resume most of your normal activities including work
- Wear compression stockings as advised
- Avoid strenuous high impact activities like running, jogging or hockey, soccer
- Avoid lifting heavy weights with your legs, or vigorous lunges or squats
- Avoid hot tubs, saunas and hot yoga
- Avoid long distance air travel (flights over 5 hours) for 2 weeks following sclerotherapy treatment
Everybody has a unique pattern of veins and the number of treatments will vary between individuals. Typically, larger veins requiring ultrasound guided injections will take 2-4 visits per leg. Medium veins (covered by OHIP) vary significantly, but can be between 2-8 visits per leg. And cosmetic spider veins also vary significantly, but can reach up to 6-8 sessions per leg.

If ultrasound guided sclerotherapy is required, treatment is limited to one leg at a time with appointments scheduled 2-4 weeks apart. We usually do 1-3 injections per visit. Medium veins covered by OHIP are also only treated on one leg at a time, but we do 8-10 injections per visit. Cosmetic spider veins involve 30-40 injections per visit which can be done on either one or both legs. Visits for medium and cosmetic veins are done every 1-4 weeks for best results.
It is strongly advised to reassess your legs in 6 months time once your present treatment has been completed. Ongoing maintenance is an important part of healthy vein care.
Symptom relief can sometimes be noticed within the first 2-4 weeks of treatment. The cosmetic improvement of the vein can sometimes be noticed after 1-4 weeks depending on the extent of the problem, but continues to improve over the next few months.

Military patients need a referral from a doctor for coverage of your treatments.
Quebec/out of province patients
Quebec/out of province patients pay for your visits and you can submit your receipts to Quebec for reimbursement. Note that Quebec does not pay for any treatments using sclerotherapy, just the consultation.
